Zanzo – a business built on transparency, diversity, and sustainability

zanzo

Zanzo was founded by Anneliese and Krys, who were driven by a deep frustration with the hidden costs and lack of transparency they encountered in their previous jobs. They envisioned a company built on honesty, where everything from costs, expectations and challenges was out in the open. Their commitment to the cause drove a desire to foster genuine connections with their clients, partners, and employees.

The company was profoundly shaped by the diverse backgrounds of its founders Anneliese and Krys, which included the experiences from the LGBTQ+ community, ethnic minorities, and neurodiverse individuals. In their previous roles, Anneliese and Krys often felt undervalued, which only fuelled their drive to create a company where individuality is celebrated. They believe that diversity sparks innovation, and this philosophy has cultivated a team that not only generates more creative solutions but also significantly enriches the company’s culture.

Anneliese and Krys identified significant gaps in eco-friendly practices within their industry. This spurred them on to set new standards, which led to sustainable solutions. Both concerned about the environmental impact of service industries, Anneliese and Krys saw Zanzo as a vehicle to make a positive difference. Guided by its core values of transparency, individuality, innovation, and sustainability, Anneliese and Krys took a leap of faith, selling their possessions and transforming their small flat into Zanzo’s headquarters.

Navigating unique challenges from the start
Running a business, while balancing child-rearing and saving money was particularly tough. Anneliese and Krys managed by setting clear priorities and making difficult financial decisions together – although their backgrounds presented additional hurdles. As LGBTQ+, neurodiverse founders from ethnic minority backgrounds, they faced discrimination and limited access to resources. However, their resilience and adaptability, helped them break through these barriers and they have since built a supportive community through organisations like MSDUK and OutBritain which has been instrumental in providing vital support.

Despite facing personal health challenges, including major surgeries shortly after launching Zanzo, Anneliese and Krys didn’t let this hinder their progress. Through clear goal-setting and open communications, they managed to balance personal care, self-growth, and business responsibilities, staying committed to their vision without compromising their well-being.

A significant turning point was addressing the frustration of storing used sharps boxes at home. This issue highlighted the lack of dignified medical waste disposal options for the LGBTQ+ community, leading them to create a sustainable solution that also supports dignity and inclusion.

Making a difference
Zanzo’s journey has been immensely fulfilling, marked by a series of rewarding experiences and excellent feedback received from individuals who feel safer and more supported. The collaboration within their diverse team, who share the company’s values, enables Zanzo to thrive, while instilling a profound sense of pride.

Recently, Zanzo was honoured to receive the highly commended sustainability award from Medilink, which recognises their research into developing innovative solutions in creating a sustainable circular system for medical waste and providing carbon-neutral services. Their certification by MSDUK underscores their commitment to diversity and inclusive business practices. While their OutBritain certificate and approved partner listing also highlights their dedication to support the LGBTQ+ community and maintain a high standard of service and inclusivity.

Zanzo also partners with local universities and esteemed institutions in health, life sciences, and innovation sectors which has been particularly rewarding. These collaborations allow Zanzo to contribute to innovative research, enhancing their services and impact.

Aspiring entrepreneurs
Anneliese and Krys, say “Find out what drives ‘you’ – your ‘why’ and be prepared to develop a thick skin. Having a unique idea is less crucial than perseverance, however, having a solid, adaptable plan and an honest team that shares your mission is vital.

Embracing constructive criticism is also necessary to promote personal and professional growth. Recognising your weaknesses and surrounding yourself with people who complement your skill gaps is also equally important.”

Big things are brewing at Zanzo!
Zanzo are currently working on some exciting plans to take their business to the next level, while staying true to what matters most. They are focused on enhancing their medical waste disposal services and partnering with organisations like Innovate UK, WMHTIA, and Medilink as a result of working with the Business Growth West Midlands Investment Readiness programme delivered by Oxford Innovation Advice to expand their impact. They are also exploring new services to reach more people and potentially expand the business to new locations.

Technology is another area of excitement. Zanzo plan to use the latest tools to streamline operations and improve their client service. Environmental sustainability remains a priority, and they are continually seeking ways to be more eco-friendly.

Investing in their team is equally important. Zanzo is developing a top-notch training program to equip everyone with the skills they need to excel. They are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive work environment by hiring a diverse team, updating policies, and working closely with Stonewall – a UK, LGBTQ+ charity.

As Zanzo ramp up their marketing and branding efforts, they continue to grow sustainably while staying true to their core values and are excited about the bright future ahead.

Zanzo’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community
Supporting the LGBTQ+ community is at the heart of Zanzo’s mission, as the company is committed to fostering a work environment that respects everyone’s identity. In line with this commitment, their medical waste initiative is specifically tailored to address the unique needs of the community and giving back is essential; Krys volunteers at LGBT+ Wolverhampton and Beyond Boundaries, and Anneliese serves as a trustee and Safeguarding governor for X2Y, supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

Celebrating Pride
Pride is a powerful celebration of who Zanzo are – a vibrant community of unique individuals. It reminds them that they deserve to exist openly, love freely, and have their voices heard. Pride embodies love, unity, and belonging, while acknowledging the ongoing fight for equality and reflecting on their progress. It encourages them to be unapologetically themselves, celebrating their identities and striving for a future free from discrimination.

At Zanzo, community and inclusivity are deeply valued. They are committed to creating a welcoming space for everyone, embracing every background and identity. Their engagement with the LGBTQ+ community extends beyond providing services – it is about belonging and acceptance.
