Oxford Innovation Advice client, Restrap, wins Kings Award for Enterprise 2024

Oxford Innovation Advice client Restrap Workshop

Yorkshire-based cycling products manufacturer has won a King’s Award for International Trade for outstanding short term growth in overseas sales over three years.

Restrap is excited to announce that they have been honoured with the King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade.

The International Trade Award was bestowed in recognition of Restrap’s outstanding short term growth in overseas sales over the last three years. During that time, overseas revenue grew by more than 260% alongside a more than three-fold growth in total turnover. Top overseas revenue comes from Germany, Benelux, France, the United States and Denmark and new markets were established in New Zealand, the United States, South Korea and Malaysia.

Restrap specialises in making technical bikepacking* and cycle touring gear, and accessories for all kinds of riding. They are known for manufacturing the best functional, durable, sustainable bags and equipment for travelling by bike, all completely in-house in their Leeds workshop.

With the help of a Prince’s Trust loan in 2010, the business grew from a back bedroom to a small workshop on Aire Street in Leeds, to their current workshop on Kirkstall Road. Restrap now employ 39 people and continue to grow internationally and in the UK.

Oxford Innovation Advice has supported Restrap through two of its regional business support programmes over the last year. Support from the Yorkshire and Humber Made Smarter programme enabled then to identify what manufacturing technical advances would benefit their processes, resulting in the purchase of an advanced laser cutting – electronic sewing machine, as well as using a Made Smarter digital voucher to purchase new computer equipment to improve efficiency across the business.

Additional support delivered by Oxford Innovation Advice was provided through the West Yorkshire Good Growth Programme, combining bespoke one-to-one business coaching with action-oriented group activities, all led by experts with business experience. Restrap undertook a business diagnostic, GROWTHmapper, which identified the need to enhance marketing creativities to support their sustainable growth and are in the process of engaging with an external marketing expert.

About The Kings Awards for Enterprise

The King’s Awards for Enterprise is the most prestigious business awards in the UK. The awards were first established in 1965 and since then over 7000 companies have achieved a King’s Award. 2024 marks the second year of The King’s Awards for Enterprise, reflecting His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s by recognising outstanding UK businesses.

The awards celebrate the success of exciting and innovative businesses which are leading the way with pioneering products or services, delivering impressive social mobility programmes, or showing their commitment to excellent sustainable development practices.

This year 252 businesses have been recognised for their contribution to International Trade, Innovation, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity (through Social Mobility).

The Department for Business and Trade are hosting an online event taking place on Thursday 25th July between 2pm-3.30pm to encourage applications for next year’s King’s Awards for Enterprise. You can request a place by emailing them with your name and company, here.
