Success story

Birmingham United FC

Birmingham United FC, is a semi-professional football club rooted in the Balsall Heath and Moseley areas of Birmingham. Founded by Siraj Hussain and Rajab Noor, the club embodies the city’s vibrant diversity by welcoming players from inner-city backgrounds, many of whom are first- or second-generation immigrants from Africa and Southeast Asia.

Beyond football, Birmingham United serves as a mission-driven initiative to engage youth positively and inclusively, offering an alternative to the challenges often faced by young people in urban areas.

The founders were passionate about creating not just a club but a community fixture – a team that resonates with Birmingham’s values of inclusivity and support.

“We feel football has an incredible power to engage and support the development of young people”

Despite their clear vision, Birmingham United faced substantial challenges, particularly in securing the funding necessary for sustainable growth and greater community impact. Recognising the need for expert guidance, the club turned to the Business Growth West Midlands Investment Readiness Programme, delivered by Oxford Innovation Advice. Through one-on-one coaching sessions, they engaged with local business finance specialist Jack Francis Kelly, who provided expert insights and strategies tailored to their unique position as a community-focused sports organisation.

One of the primary areas the programme addressed was funding and financial stability. Cautious about debt financing due to the unpredictable cash flow typical of grassroots football, Birmingham United explored innovative funding avenues through the programme.

They embraced the idea of crowdfunding, which will allow them to connect with supporters while generating essential funds. This community-led approach not only aligned perfectly with the club’s ethos but also leveraged local enthusiasm to sustain their initiatives.

Speaking on his experience with the programme, Siraj said,

“We were made aware of the Business Growth West Midlands Investment Readiness Programme, delivered by Oxford Innovation Advice through an event they ran that took place near where we are based. We got involved because of the wrap-around support on offer as well gaining a greater insight into the various ways in which we may be able to fundraise for our organisation. Jack has been an incredible support for us as we now look to develop our organisation and his insights have been invaluable.”

In addition to crowdfunding, the programme emphasised the importance of securing sponsorships. Recognising the club’s limited experience in negotiating sponsorship deals, Jack guided Birmingham United in refining their brand offerings and developing sponsor-ready packages.

By enhancing their approach to sponsorship, the club is now looking to open doors to potential partnerships with local businesses and larger football clubs, fostering stronger links across Birmingham’s football ecosystem.

“Securing sustainable funding and building strong relationships are vital for community clubs like Birmingham United FC.”

While the results of this support are still unfolding, the initial impact is evident.

The club’s strategic approach has become more focused, incorporating brand visibility efforts and strengthening connections with the local council. Although measurable financial gains may take time, Birmingham United’s groundwork is paving the way for sustainable operations and new funding avenues.

The Investment Readiness Programme has enabled them to allocate resources more effectively, avoid unsuitable funding options, and make decisions aligned with their long-term objectives. Birmingham United’s aspirations extend beyond immediate financial stability. Their ultimate vision is to progress through the football leagues and gain broader recognition.

Long-term goals include establishing a dedicated club facility in the heart of their community – a space that will provide a permanent base for future generations. This facility would serve as a hub for local youth, offering training and mentorship to help deter involvement in gang violence, a pressing issue in the area. To support this vision, Birmingham United has been introduced to key community and business figures who can provide mentorship and elevate the club’s profile within both local government and the broader public.

Through the support of the Business Growth West Midlands Investment Readiness Programme, Birmingham United FC is taking confident strides toward becoming a permanent, positive force in Birmingham.

Their journey stresses the programme’s value for organisations committed to both community impact and sustainable growth, making Birmingham United an inspiring case of grassroots resilience and ambition.
